Buying my plants a new shelf
Last week, I bought my plants a new shelf for my bedroom. I knew that I needed something tall and narrow with multiples shelves to store the houseplants who live in my sleep, and sometimes chill, space. I found a five-tier bamboo shelving unit on Amazon and ordered it.
Trying to decide how to arrange my plants on the new shelf took more thought than I anticipated; I was able to assemble the shelf far faster than I was able to arrange my plants according to their needs and heights.
On the top shelf, tier 1, I put my monstera deliciosa, pink allusion syngonium and black cardinal philodendron. I was trying to find a variety of heights for visual interest as well as variation in coloration.
The second shelf was a little easier, as I have young plants that fit easily into the space, though one will eventually outgrown the shelf (calathea zebrina). Hopefully, the pothos will each get too big to fit together on the shelf. There’s nothing better than a really full, lush pothos.
The third shelf easily fit my Snow White Waffle Plant but I don’t think my Berry Allusion Syngonium is long for this shelf, as its already pretty tall.
The fourth shelf is currently occupied by two Olympia False Aralias that I will eventually pot together. While they are small now, these are actually trees that will grow to between four and five feet. So, their time in the shelf may be short as well.
The fifth shelf is currently unoccupied but will likely store chic items such as moisture readers and bottles of distilled water. While a bottle of distilled water isn’t exactly as pretty as a plant, it is heavy and this shelf does need some bottom weighting to keep everything else steady.
Styling my new plant shelf was so exciting that one of my Fiddle Leaf Figs even took the time to visit from its usual hang out in the kitchen. In the photo it’s checking out a new three-legged basket I bought from Home Goods, probably wanting to call dibs before the ficus benjaminas can stake their claim.
If you have any suggestions for my shelf, leave me a comment! I am always looking for feedback and new ideas.
Until next time, be well and take care!
